10 Brain Hacks To Instantly Improve Your Memory

memory-1024x1024

Having a sharp memory is important for a lot of reasons. Not only should it improve your professional life, but going to dinner parties and remembering everyone’s name is downright impressive. If you think you have been cursed with a terrible memory, I have good news for you: that’s not true. Anyone can improve their memory by following this simple advice. Learning how to remember things is vital. Many intelligent people have a hard time remembering things simply because they’re not attempting to recover the information (or store it) properly. Just follow these tips, you’ll see an improvement.

1.) Use the “snooze button:” To remember random information like an address or phone number, instead of repeating it to yourself, just rehearse it every 15 seconds or so for a few minutes. Don’t wait longer than that or else the memory will decay.

2.) The peg system: This may seem like a bizarre method to recall information, but he human body peg system works. What you do is imagine parts of the human body itself and use them as “pegs” to store information. You visualize an image of what you are trying to remember and associate it with a corresponding body part.

3.) Just sincerely FOCUS: Many people listen to music or have the television on while they study, but this actually significantly impairs the ability to memorize information. You can’t actually multi-task, you just jump in between tasks. So, to memorize information, just focus and limit other stimuli.

4.) Linking: If you link items together in a list (even if they are unrelated), it’s easier to remember them. A common way to link items together on a list is with a short story, where you incorporate every item.

5.) The keyword method: This is a useful trick when you need to memorize vocabulary when learning a foreign language. To use it, take a sound that you recognize from the new word, visualize that sound and then relate it to the new word you are learning.

6.) The method of Loci: This is also known as the Journey Method and the Roman Room Method. This old memory technique uses a “memory palace” or house. You mentally walk through an area where you have stored information. By walking through different rooms or areas, you can remember the information you stored in those rooms.

7.) Use the chunking method: According to research, you can hold about five to nine (seven on average) items in your working memory at one time. However, we can remember things like a phone number (10 digits-long) by chunking the information into groups. Therefore, that 10 digit phone number is only really three pieces of information.

8.) Setting the information: There is a phenomenon called context-dependent memory, where you can give yourself clues for remembering things based on the sensory input you are experiencing at the time of the memory. Researchers found that when test participants learned something underwater, they could recall the information better when underwater again.

9.) Using music to enhance memory: You shouldn’t distract yourself with music if you’re trying to remember something. Instead, putting long strings of text TO music (like lyrics) is an effective way to remember something. Think of all of the songs you learned in grade school to remember facts; that’s this mnemonic at work.

10.) Smell enhances memory: Smell is one of the most powerful memory recall devices possible. This sense memory is exceptionally strong because the nose is able to go directly to your memory center. If you were studying for a test and wearing a certain perfume, if you wore the same perfume during the test you may perform better.

Easy, right? So the next time you have to remember some facts for a presentation (or you’re at an awesome, busy barbecue), just use some of these tips to improve your ability to recall things. Good luck! Share this wealth of information by clicking on the button below.

How Your Digestion Controls Your Immune System

digestive-system-728x400

You are 90% bacteria.

Let that sink in for a second… Just think: for every cell in your body, you have 9 cells of bacteria living in and on your body. It can be a little creepy if you think about it too much.

Most of your bacteria is living inside your intestinal tract, otherwise known as your “gut.” The health of this organism is paramount to the health of your body. Why, you ask?

80% of your immune system spends most of its time around your gut. The health of your gut bacteria and the health of your immune system are vitally linked. When your gut bacteria is balanced, your immune system is also balanced. But when it’s out of balance, so is your immune system.

Signs that your immune system is out of balance are: food and seasonal allergies, chronic inflammation, chronic sinusitis, and colds and flus that linger for weeks.

Food sensitivities are a major sign and cause of an immune system imbalance. Food, specifically undigested protein, looks just like a virus or bacteria and our immune system creates an antibody to it. We see this in life-threatening reactions like anaphylactic shock to nuts or shellfish. We can also have a much quieter, non-life threatening reaction to a food (undigested protein), which can over-stimulate our immune system and lead to seasonal allergies, eczema, and many inflammatory conditions. These are usually referred to as food sensitivities. What I’ve seen over and over again in my practice is that once we discover the foods that you aren’t digesting properly you can gain control over allergies, eczema, and many inflammatory conditions.

Undigested protein gets into our blood stream through a “leaky gut.” This is when our intestinal tract is damaged and it allows undigested particles to be absorbed into the blood stream. These proteins can stimulate our immune system for up to 5 days. This is why it’s so difficult to figure out our food sensitivities. Even a small amount of gluten, dairy, corn, or soy (our culture’s main food triggers) each week can cause our immune system to remain over-stimulated and we will feel our symptoms continuously… even if we’ve tried our best to reduce these possible triggers.

The best way to balance our immune system is by having a healthy and strong digestive system, and this means our gut bacteria needs to be in balance. Our North American way of eating hasn’t helped to keep our gut bacteria balanced. Most traditional cultures regularly consume fermented foods like natural yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi, which feed the beneficial bacteria in our gut. In North America, however, we tend to do the opposite. Processed food, refined sugar, chlorine, and antibiotics are major causes of a gut bacteria imbalance.

When your gut is hosting 75% beneficial bacteria, your body (digestion, immunity, brain) is able to create balance. But when the prevalent bacteria in your gut is “bad” bacteria (bacteria that doesn’t assist us), they allow for an overgrowth of yeast, molds, and fungus – as well as many digestive symptoms, like bloating, foul-smelling gas, distention, pain, constipation, diarrhea, and a “leaky gut.”

How to Keep Your Gut Bacteria Balanced:

Eat whole, unrefined foods. Remove all refined sugars and grains which feed the “bad” bacteria.
Eat naturally fermented foods daily, and take a probiotic supplement. Probiotic supplements contain high amounts of beneficial bacteria and “seed” the gut – an important part of finding balance.
Understand the causes of your digestive symptoms, and re-balance them. All digestive symptoms are signs that food isn’t being properly broken down and can feed the “bad” bacteria.

Keep your digestive system and immune system working optimally by keeping your gut bacteria healthy and happy!

8 Things You Don’t Owe An Explanation For

explanation

Have you ever thought about how many people live their lives following someone else’s rules, explaining and justifying their decisions and actions to people who have nothing to do with their personal affairs? Have you ever thought that you might be among those people?

“What I was trying to do was…”
“No, no, what I meant was…”
“I actually wanted to…”
“Just let me explain….”

You will never be able to please everyone. Stop wasting all this energy to do so. The only people worth explaining yourself to are your friends and family. But if they are as close to you as you think, they probably get you, sometimes better than you get yourself. So if you need to give someone an explanation, go ahead. But if you only do it because you feel obliged to, you’d better cut it off. Especially when it comes to:

1. Your priorities.

We are all different people with different dreams, values and purposes, and it is absolutely normal that we have different priorities, too. Remember that you have the right to decide what is important in your life and put it on top of your list. No explanations needed. It is up to you what you do with your time and who you spend it with. You shouldn’t feel guilty for not fitting into one’s expectations about what you should be putting first.

2. An apology when you are not sorry

An apology without regret is like a car without an engine – it will take you nowhere. Many people apologize just in order to end the argument but isn’t worth anything. When it’s not coming from the inside of your soul, the “sorry thing” is useless because what you seem to be sorry for will either happen again or nothing will change at all. If you think you were right, do not apologize.

3. Agreement with something you disagree with

Listen, pay attention, analyze but don’t let someone else’s voice sound louder in your head than your own inner voice. Speak your mind. Get rid of the heaviness that is provoked by unspoken disagreement. You don’t have always to say “yes”, especially when you want to say “no” (sounds logical but in real life situations logic is not a must, is it?). People who have mastered the art of refusal tend to be happier because they more rarely have to do something they don’t feel like doing.

4. The way you live

You are single, divorced, live with your parents, change your roommates often, look like you are homeless when you go to the store for a snack. And so what? If you are happy with the way it is, let it be. You prefer to live with no marriage? Okay, this doesn’t make you less reliable nor does it question your values. Don’t go on justifying your actions to each and every person who would comment on them. People have to not only stop being so judgmental, but also to stop letting others’ opinion influence their choices.

5. The need of time only for yourself

The fear of being taken for antisocial, selfish, overweening is something most of us have felt at some point in our lives. And this is totally normal. We are designed to live in a society, in a group, and the process of socialization is very important for each and every individual. But this doesn’t mean that you cannot spend time by yourself. Just the opposite. Everyone needs to sit alone with their own thoughts or simply with their own company. You don’t have to apologize for choosing a good book, or some good music and yourself instead of going out, for example. If you do need this, enjoy it with no regrets.

6. Your appearance

Fat or skinny, short or tall, blond or redhead? You can pierce your tooth if you want and this would be your business only because your body belongs only to you. If you dislike something about the way you look, put effort into changing it, not into explaining it to others. Luckily, today there is such a mixture of styles and cultures all over the world that people hardly ever get surprised by others’ crazy appearances. Of course, there will always be those small-minded individuals with their harsh comments and low self-esteem. Just remember that they matter just as much as a sponge does.

7. Your political, religious or sexual preferences

You have the right to have your own opinion in every area. Your attitude towards religion, politics or sex are things that concern you and yourself. Having different beliefs than the conventional ones doesn’t make you defected. You have the right to decide which political party you support, who you pray to, what you do in your bedroom just as much as you can choose between Coca-Cola and Pepsi. It’s a part of your individuality and this is the only explanation needed.

8. Your choice of relationships

You are dating a guy that is not exactly Mr. Handsome but you find all those things that make you happy in him. Or you are in love with a woman that is older than you, and earns more but you complete each other and make a great team. Yes, some people tend to miss out on the details. They spot the scandalous part of the story first and are always ready to judge. You can try to put your picture in someone else’s frame, but it most probably won’t fit. And then what – would you throw it away or would you enjoy the image without the frame?

As a conclusion, I would like to make one thing clear. Living for other people’s approval is like not living at all. Learning to live for yourself is hard and might take some years until you achieve some progress. The tricky part is separating the confidence of being the captain of your life from the arrogance of begging no pardon. As Chris Jami says: “There are two circumstances that lead to arrogance: one is when you’re wrong and you can’t face it; the other is when you’re right and nobody else can face it.” Make sure you avoid those circumstances while working for your happiness.

A Mindblowing Analysis of The Matrix Trilogy And Its Hidden Messages

On September 15, 2012, researcher Mark Passio gave a detailed presentation that outlined the deeper meanings that were hidden within the Matrix trilogy. The presentation was held at “Liberties” in Philadelphia and was one of the lead-up events for the 2013 Free Your Mind Conference.

The presentation delves into how concepts like authority, truth and individualism were depicted through symbolism and allegory and discusses some of the underlying themes that are relevant for all three films. Each film was very carefully created, with every bit of dialogue and every scene carefully planned to paint the big picture.

The presentation ends with a message of hope, showing that human beings do have the power to escape the matrix if they actually put their minds to it.

It doesn’t matter how big of a fan you are, you are guaranteed to learn something new in this presentation.
Mark Passio will also be joining dozens of other great speakers to discuss these topics, and many other issues that are facing our world at this time.

Something Unexpectedly Terrifying Happens Every Time You Get An MRI

MRI stands for “magnetic resonance imaging,” and is a helpful device in the medical community. MRIs aid in the investigation of patients’ anatomies, using magnetic fields and radio waves to see through skin and bone.

If you’ve ever had a scan, you know that when the doctor hands you the results, the image you see looks horrifying. It almost makes you want to ask, “Doctor, is there a demon inside of me?” Below are some of the creepiest MRI scans people felt they really needed to share with the Internet.

This looks like a malignant spirit, but it’s actually just a human being who went through an MRI machine.

This is a child’s head. All the cute little children of the world secretly look like this.

You can tell here that this person has proptosis, a condition that causes the eyes to be too far forward.

This Guy took his MRIs and graciously 3D rendered them for us, adding another dimension of horror.

This is what the whole body looks like as it goes through an MRI machine, from head to toe.

When you put fruits and vegetables through the machine, they look like trippy, psychedelic freak outs. Check out this groovy banana!

Broccoli, baby!

And a tomato!

There’s something about these faces coming out of the dark that make them look like great heavy metal album covers. I seriously don’t think there’s anything more metal than a MRI scan of a sinus infection at this point.
