Probiotics the key to CURING nut allergies for life


Peanut allergies are one of the most common food allergies, and one that children are often unable to grow out of. Though a recent study may be set to change that. Led by allergist and immunologist Professor Mimi Tang, a team of Australian researchers have uncovered a successful treatment for children with peanut allergies. Even more compelling is the fact that the experimental trial was carried out four years ago and yet its effects continue to protect the children from allergic reactions many years later.
The original clinical trial was carried out in 2013 at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne, Victoria. A total of 48 children were enrolled in the trial and were randomly given either a placebo or PPOIT, which stands for “probiotic with peanut oral immunotherapy”. This radical form of treatment was the combination of peanut protein and the probiotic lactobacillus rhamnosus. In lieu of avoiding peanuts in their entirety, Tang designed this based on the idea of reprogramming the immune system response to peanuts into eventual tolerance, the effects of which were further boosted by the presence of probiotics.
This occurred once daily over a period of 18 months. At the end of that stage of the trial, the researchers found that 82 percent of the children who received PPOIT had developed a tolerance to peanuts; by contrast, only four percent of the children from the placebo group had acquired the same tolerance. Following this, the children whom the researchers deemed peanut-tolerant were asked to consume peanuts for about four years after the trial’s conclusion.
During the follow-up, it was discovered that 80 percent of the PPOIT-treated participants continued to eat peanuts and 70 percent remained tolerant to peanuts well after the trial ended.
Tang has called the results, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, nothing short of “exciting” and “life-changing for the children.” Speaking to the DailyMail.co.uk, Tang commented: “We had children who came into the study allergic to peanuts, having to avoid peanuts in their diet, being very vigilant around that, carrying a lot of anxiety,” she said. “At the end of treatment, and even four years later, many of these children who had benefited from our probiotic peanut therapy could now live like a child who didn’t have peanut allergy.”
“These children had been eating peanut freely in their diet without having to follow any particular program of peanut intake in the years after treatment was completed,” Tang noted before adding: “This is a major step forward in identifying an effective treatment to address the food allergy problem in Western societies.” (Related: Probiotics taken during pregnancy decrease risk of allergies in kids.)

What is lactobacillus rhamnosus?

As a probiotic, lactobacillus rhamnosus is a beneficial type of bacteria typically obtained by eating fermented foods like yogurt. According to LiveStrong.com, probiotics work by releasing certain chemicals when broken down by the body. These chemicals inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, in turn decreasing the risk of disease and infection.
What makes lactobacillus rhamnosus unique is its ability to boost immune system function. Consumption of this probiotic has been connected with increased phagocytic activity in perotineal cells and blood. Phagocytic activity, in turn, is essential to the health of any living organism since weak phagocytic activity will often times result in chronic fungal and bacterial infections.
Numerous studies carried out over the years pointed towards lactobacillus rhamnosus as a powerful combatant against allergies, so it comes as no big surprise that its inclusion in Tang’s treatment increased its efficacy and longevity.

The Hidden Problem with Your Digestion

A huge percentage of people who seem perfectly healthy on the outside go through life feeling quietly bloated and uncomfortable. It seems like everyone around them can eat anything they like with no obvious consequences, while they seem to react to anything and everything.
It’s nothing so extreme they can’t deal with it, of course; if they found themselves doubled over in pain from a particular food or restaurant, they’d quickly learn to avoid the trigger. But they’ve never been able to pinpoint the problem. Their bowels alternate between constipation and diarrhea, with no apparent pattern. Because they can’t identify the cause, and because the doctor has told them all they can do is manage symptoms, they’ve just learned to live with it.
And yet they wonder… does everyone feel this way? Is this normal?
I see cases like this every day. There was even a time when I lived it myself. And I can tell you: the answer is no. It’s not normal, and it is possible to heal.
The collective term usually applied to such symptoms is Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. This is less of a diagnosis, and more of a description of symptoms.This is because there are several possible underlying causes.
The digestive process begins in the mouth and carries on through the esophagus, to the stomach, with contributions by the liver and the pancreas, and then absorption of nutrients should occur in the small intestine. The remaining waste then passes through the colon and out the anus.The problem can begin in any one of these places, or in several.
In my practice, I’ve found there are one of four main causes of digestive disturbance: Dysbiosis, Hypochlorhydria, Food Allergies, or Slow Bowel Transit.

The Four Causes of Digestive Disturbance

  • Dysbiosis.Dysbiosis is an imbalance in your gut flora. You can think of your gut flora as being part of two groups: the good guys, and the bad guys. We all have some of each, but we start suffering physically if there are more bad guys than good guys.
  • Hypochlorhydria.Hypochlorhydria means that you have too little stomach acid. Trying to digest food without stomach acid is like trying to brush your teeth without toothpaste: you can go through the motions, but the gunk remains undissolved. In the same way, when you try to eat food without enough hydrochloric acid, your food cannot be properly broken down. This means the bacteria in your gut will have to do it for you.
  • Food Allergies.5  Food Allergies are when your immune system gets a little confused and thinks that something good for you is actually bad for you. Because it is your immune system’s job to protect you from anything that it perceives as bad, it starts attacking certain foods as invaders, when it should be recognizing them as your friends. This typically happens because of a breakdown in the gut lining that lets food particles end up in places they shouldn’t.
  • Slow Bowel Transit.Slow Bowel Transit means that your food takes too long to digest—kind of like a car driving 35 on the highway. Slow bowel transit isn’t the same as constipation because it is not a problem with the stool itself, but with the digestive tract’s ability to process it. Of course, slow bowel transit can actually cause constipation, so it is possible to have both.
The good news is, no matter which of the four main causes of digestive disturbance you have, you can likely improve your digestion if you follow these simple steps. You can get your healthy digestion back.

Steps to Improve Your Digestion Right Now

  1. Slow down. Chew your food slowly. When you’re eating, be all there. Relax! This will help redirect blood flow to your gut,assisting your pancreas in enzyme production and release.
  2. Cut out processed foods. This means eating whole, real foods that are not in packages: things like nuts, seeds, grains and legumes you buy in bulk and cook yourself, veggies, fruits, eggs, meat, and fish. This will eliminate a lot of the food additives that you might be reacting to, and will likely help calm down at least some of your gut inflammation.8
  3. Steam, sauté, or lightly cook your veggies. Raw veggies and legumes can easily induce bloating. Light heat will help break down these starches, easing the strain on your gut.While you’re at it, soak your beans before you cook them, as well.
  4. Drink plenty of water. One major cause of constipation is low water intake.10 You should be getting in half your body weight of water in ounces daily—more if you’re sweating!
  5. Start exercising. Movement helps your bowels to move too!11 Bonus: the endorphins will help you feel healthier overall. If you have been sedentary for awhile, make sure you start slow: even just walking for twenty minutes three times per week will go a long way.

Easily dump dairy with these 7 modern substitutes

While health authorities still recommend people drink three glasses of milk a day to boost calcium levels and strengthen bones, more and more researchers are concluding that you might be better off ditching milk and dairy products altogether.
A study published in the British Medical Journal found that people who drank three or more glasses of milk a day did not show a decrease in bone fractures when compared with those who consumed less than one glass of milk a day. Furthermore, people who drank the most milk were twice as likely to die early.
While these findings are a good reason to give up milk, there are several other reasons why more people are seeking alternatives to dairy. About 75 percent of the world’s population can’t properly process the lactose in milk-based products, leading to bloating, gas, and diarrhea. In addition, two to three percent of children under three have a milk allergy. Lastly, with a growing concern of contaminants (antibiotics and hormones), and more people choosing an animal-friendly vegan or ovo-vegetarian diet, individuals that consume dairy are in decline.
If you go dairy-free, you will have to give up more than just milk. Here are seven great alternatives that may help you on your way.

1.      Milk substitutes

There is a wide variety of milk alternatives out there, including almond, oat, coconut, rice, hemp, cashew, and flax milk. The nutrient content of these dairy-free milk alternatives can vary substantially. Some are fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 to mimic the nutrient content of regular milk, while others are packed with added sugars, flavor enhancers, and preservatives. Make sure to carefully read the food labels and pick the ones with the most nutrients and the least sugar and chemicals.

2.      Yogurt replacements

Yogurt is packed with gut-friendly bacteria that help promote good health. Going dairy-free doesn’t mean you must miss out on these gut boosting probiotics. Today, many grocery stores offer a variety of probiotic yogurts made from nut and seed milks that are cultured with live, active bacteria.

3.      Cheese substitutes

Just as regular cheese, you have soft and hard nondairy cheese. If you are a cream cheese lover, you’ll easily find soy- and nut-based versions that deliver a similar texture and taste. Hard cheeses are more challenging to make, but many companies have come up with dairy-free cheese alternatives that have a similar texture as regular cheese. Butter alternatives available today are either made from vegetable oils or coconut. Depending on the usage, you could also opt for nut and seed butters such as peanut, almond, or cashew butter.

If you love creamy soups and sauces or regularly add cream to your tea or coffee, then you are lucky. Today, many grocery stores sell great-tasting nondairy alternatives to heavy cream, whipping cream, and coffee creamers. (Beware of partially hydrogenated oils used in coffee creamers, however.)

6.      Sour cream replacements

There is a wide variety of soy-based sour creams available on the market. If you are trying to avoid soy-based products, you might have to look a little bit longer to find a sour cream substitute. If you can’t find any, plain nondairy yogurt makes a good substitute in most recipes.

7.      Ice cream alternatives

As the temperatures rise in the northern hemisphere, many people are starting to look forward to a refreshing ice cream. Fortunately, there are many nondairy ice cream substitutes available today.
